Diamond Dermabrasion
Wednesday July 4, 2001

Their faces are their fortunes. But long hours under hot lights and heavy makeup can wreak havoc on a celebrity's skin. So what's the secret to keeping faces looking fresh?

Vera Brown says, "I can honestly say that I have never seen anything that is more beneficial than the diamond dermabrasion." Skin specialist to the stars, Vera Brown says diamonds are not only a girl's best friend, but also their best beauty secret. "It's a tip that is made of fine, fine diamond and when it goes over the skin, there's no redness."

Diamond microdermabrasion peels away dead skin and reduces wrinkles, acne scars, and brown spots. It's a kinder, gentler twist on an old procedure. You may have heard of microdermabrasion. Crystals sand blast the face leaving skin red and sore.

Mary Becker was looking for a more pleasant peel. So she visited Vera's Retreat in the Glen. Using the diamond tipped wand, the top layer of skin is removed while a gentle vacuum takes away the dead cells. Next a cooling is mask is applied. Then the face is massaged with a vitamin-filled cream to help new skin cells grow. Finally, air is blown over Mary's face to cool and re-moisturize.

Afterward Mary said, "I feel great. My skin feels really fresh and tingly." Diamond microdermabrasion, seems like this treatment's is a real gem!

"The DiamondTome™ Wand peel is a new type of microdermabrader offered by Richard G. Glogau, clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California at San Francisco. It uses a "diamond encrusted wand to vacuum the skin, so you get a more even abrasion without the gritty residue of the sodium bicarbonate crystals," he says.

...a new machine that is under the brand name of NewApeel™ doesn't even use particles. Instead, it resurfaces with "a diamond-chip-encrusted wand" with variable grits. Like in regular microdermabrasion, this machine uses suction, and the doctor can turn it up or down to control the depth of the procedure. It's also supposedly less drying than the aluminum-oxide crystals.

HOLD THE FACE-LIFT Until recently, microdermabrasion, the skin-resurfacing treatment (about $200), meant bombarding your face with tiny crystals shot through a wand. In the NewApeel™ microdermabrasion system by Altair, a diamond-encrusted tip replaces the crystals, polishing the skin and reducing fine lines, large pores and mild acne scars. We heard about it at New York plastic surgeon Norman Pastorek's office (212-987-4700) where skin care specialist Janice Pastorek told us that patients love it because it's more comfortable (and less messy-no particles flying around), yet the results are more dramatic.
